What is style?

25 10 2007

Richard Prince
Style is the answer to everything.
Fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous day.
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without style.
To do a dangerous thing with style, is what I call art.
Bullfighting can be an art.
Boxing can be an art.
Loving can be an art.
Opening a can of sardines can be an art.
Not many have style.
Not many can keep style.
I have seen dogs with more style than men.
Although not many dogs have style.
Cats have it with abundance.
When Hemingway put his brains to the wall with a shotgun, that was style.
For sometimes people give you style.
Joan of Arc had style. John the Baptist. Jesus. Socrates. Caesar. García Lorca.
I have met men in jail with style.
I have met more men in jail with style than men out of jail.
Style is a difference, a way of doing, a way of being done.
Six herons standing quietly in a pool of water, or you, walking out of the bathroom without seeing me.

(Charles Bukowski)

Art Chant …

14 08 2007

Seattle-born, Tacoma-bred graphic designer Art Chantry may well be known as one of the great graphic artists since Warhol. His signature, low-fi, DIY aesthetics have laid countless album covers for such Pacific Northwest rock bands as Nirvana, Hole, Soundgarden, etc. He’s also done old theater posters for various events, particularly the infamous Hempfest. His work has been featured in MoMa, Smithsonian and a huge 300+ piece retrospective at PS-1 in NY. God bless the days of non-computerized graphic designs. [EP]

Jenny Holzer

12 08 2007

Jenny Holzer is most known for her work in LED lights. Particularly her “Truism” series, a compilation of statements and aphorisms (“truisms”) which has been publicised in a variety of ways: listed on street posters, in telephone booths, and even, in 1982, on one of Times Square’s gigantic LED billboards. Her recent efforts bring her famed truisms to building facades across London. (see image below) Presented as part of the Barbican’s Beckett Centenary Festival, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of Irish poet Samuel Beckett’s birthday (April 13), the light projections will feature words drawn from the writings of Beckett and others. Find out more about Jenny Holzer in GRLog’s The Gallery Section. [EP]

Living in a glass house …

6 07 2007

The famed Phillip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, CT is now officially open to the public. What was once a private estate, this modern-century glass house is finally letting us designer-junkies get a first-hand glimpse of this timeless architectural monument. Built in 1949 by famed post-modern architect Phillip Johnson, it’s 47 sprawling acres of lush fields, oak trees and bubbling brook has been noted as one of the most beautiful places in America. It’s claim to fame was having the first glass floor where guests can look down to find a hot-water spring underneath their feet. Johnson was ahead of his time and for you to take a tour of this gem will have you waiting a long time. They’re booked solid until Spring of 2008! So in the meantime, be patient and visit their website. (EP)

They’ve been commissioned to take their street style onto the historical Kelburn Castle where these twins will leave their own historical mark. Can’t wait to see how Jeffrey Deitch will react to this. Bem-Vindo, Os Gemeos! (EP)
